Musings of a Maskuraid…

STILL GOT GAME!

Hey beautiful people, how’s your weekend going? Mine is fine.

I woke up quite pumped this morning because I had a dream in which I was a rapper. Yes, you read right. You can probably blame that on Rooftop MCs. You remember them? The Gospel Duo of SoulSnatcha and SoKleva that gave us ‘Shock Therapy’ and Lagimo. I wonder where they are now.

Anyway, yesterday I went through my cache of CD’s and found their album ‘The Minority Report’ which I jammed all the way home from work. Obvious title aside, the album is a banging classic, gospel music delivered in a revolutionary and contemporary format, pushing boundaries with a mix of radically different genres like rock and fuji. You should find it and marinate your soul. Tag any one of them if you can.

So I dreamt I was a rapper, and because I am a writer, I actually flipped open my laptop and wrote a rap verse just for the fun of it. Crazy right? Hehehehe. A writer who can’t create his own reality issa pretender no right? So, here goes.

The verse is inspired by track 8 on the album which features Protech – ‘Still Got Game’. Enjoy, or not.

I’m a minute to a hundred,
But I still breathe flames,
Surfed a million mile of mines,
But I’m still not lame,
I’m still the same,
Maskuraid be the name,
And I still got game!

So what if my mane is white,
So what if I squint at night,
So what if I need jogs to my memory,
And glasses for sight,
Papi older than the first Xerox,
But I still copy,
Ancient glory like the Guv’nator,
But my boys still swim,
Toe to toe all night,
With your favorite chick,
Had to leave the next morning,
Her legs too shaky,
Hell, I still got it,
That why the streets love me,
Hippest uncle,
Triple double,
Lyrical trouble,
Tolerant of your high score,
‘cos I will top it,
Walahi easy does it,
All the greats know this,
The streets notice,
My bad is good,
My blunt on point,
And a pin drop of my blood,
Trumps a bank of yours,
Methuselah in boxing gloves,
Sweatless as I whoop your butt,
And your mom knows not to interrupt,
Cos’ she creams my nuts….

I’m a minute to a hundred,
But I still breathe flames,
Surfed a million mile of mines,
But I’m still not lame,
I’m still the same,
Maskuraid be the name,
And I still got game!

Have a super weekend and don’t forget to get your copies of my book ‘Always & Forever’ available on Amazon and iBooks.
