“Every girl should desire to marry,

That’s the ultimate dream.”

So they said, mom, and the aunties’ posse.

The dream wasn’t mine, but they were wise,

And their pressure brought to bear,

So I believed them.

We were bound with a ring,

In front of man and God by a smiling priest,

And the pact sealed with a kiss.

“This marriage will be bliss.”

So they said, mom, and the aunties’ posse.

I didn’t think so, he had an evil temper,

But I had fate in their wisdom,

So I believed them.

Matrimony turned out a reign of fists,

A bed of stones and thorny sticks.

Every girl’s supposedly best dream,

Gradually became my nightmarish reality.

I wanted out.

“A good woman fights for her home,

She hopes, prays and persists.”

So they said, mom, and the aunties’ posse.

It was my blood, but they’d seen and done it all,

Or so I thought,

So I dried my tears,

And still I believed them.

Every life has a limit,

Even Jericho’s walls eventually breached.

“May her soul finally find peace.”

So they said, the wise aunties’ posse,

Before they switched to other gist,

As the funeral procession headed for the crypts.

This time I wasn’t listening,

And mom was screaming,

Because the pursuit of every girl’s dream,

Had left her daughter deceased.
